Hindi Language Immersion Summer Program in Naperville Schools

Naperville, Illinois — home to one of the largest Indian-American communities in the Chicago metropolitan area — launched a Hindi language immersion summer program through its school district, responding to both the heritage language needs of Indian-American families and growing interest in South Asian languages among non-South-Asian students.
The program offered young students several weeks of intensive Hindi instruction delivered through immersive methods: instruction conducted primarily in Hindi, with English used only as necessary to ensure comprehension, and activities and materials designed to make language acquisition feel like discovery rather than rote study.
Heritage language programs occupy a particular place in immigrant community life. For families where Hindi or another Indian language is spoken at home but formal literacy hasn't been maintained, structured programs provide what parents often cannot — reading and writing instruction in a language that the children hear but can't yet read. For children further from their family's linguistic heritage, the programs connect them to cultural roots that might otherwise remain abstract.
Naperville's Indian-American community had grown substantially through the technology sector's expansion in the Chicago suburbs, bringing a population that valued educational attainment, was invested in maintaining cultural connections, and had the organizational capacity to advocate effectively for programs like this one.
The program also reflected broader recognition among educators that multilingualism is an asset rather than a complication — that children who maintain heritage languages alongside English gain cognitive, social, and eventually economic advantages that are genuinely measurable.
Registration, when announced, reportedly filled quickly.
