Israel provides video of the Hamas' army chief being killed

In November 2012, Israel released video footage of an airstrike that killed Ahmed Jabari, the head of Hamas's military wing and the most senior Hamas military figure to be killed by Israel in years. The strike marked the opening of Operation Pillar of Defense, an eight-day Israeli military campaign that followed a period of escalating rocket fire from Gaza into southern Israel.

Jabari had been a central figure in Hamas's military operations for over a decade, overseeing its rocket arsenal and playing a significant role in the 2006 capture of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, whose five-year captivity ended in a 2011 prisoner exchange. Israeli officials described him as the primary engineer of Gaza's rocket infrastructure and a major obstacle to any security arrangement.

The decision to release video of the strike was itself a communication strategy — a demonstration both to Israeli domestic audiences and to regional players that Israel had the capability and willingness to eliminate senior Hamas figures. Such video releases had become a component of Israeli military operations, serving simultaneously as evidence of effectiveness and as deterrence signaling.

The operation that followed the Jabari assassination involved Israeli airstrikes against rocket storage facilities, launch sites, and command infrastructure in Gaza, while Hamas and other groups in Gaza continued firing rockets into southern Israel, including toward Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Egypt brokered a ceasefire after eight days.

The conflict resulted in six Israeli deaths and over 160 Palestinian deaths, the majority of whom were in Gaza. The underlying issues — the blockade of Gaza, Hamas's governance, rocket fire, and Israeli military responses — remained unresolved, as they had been through previous rounds of fighting and would be through subsequent ones.
