She even managed a small smile, suggesting she may be relieved to be free from her marriage to the powerful Scientologist.

What caused Hollywood couple Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes to separate? Separate bedrooms!

Cruise' living quarters were on one side of a large communal area in their lavish apartment here while Katie lived on the other side.

"It was really weird in all respects... Tom and Katie had a lot of people coming to see them there, to cut their hair and cook for them and stuff," mirror.co.uk quoted a source as saying.

"Everyone knew they stayed in separate sections of the apartment but nobody mentioned it. Katie was really embarrassed about it, and didn't seem to like people to see the way they were living behind closed doors," the source added.

The revelation exposes the deep cracks in the five-and-a-half-year marriage that led to Holmes, 33, filing for divorce from Cruise, 49, in New York last week.
