'Mommy, the babysitter has been doing the same thing to me': How Penn State abuse scandal led to arrest of teenage 'serial paedophile'

The Penn State abuse scandal, which revealed how institutional silence had allowed serial child sexual abuse to continue for years, had a ripple effect beyond the university: it prompted parents, schools, and families across the country to have conversations they had previously avoided. In at least one documented case, that ripple reached a family whose child had been trying to tell them something.
The case involved a teenage babysitter who had been molesting children in his care for an extended period. When the Penn State story broke in the news and parents began talking to their children about appropriate versus inappropriate behavior with adults, one child made the connection: what the babysitter had been doing was the same thing they were hearing about on television.
The disclosure that followed led to an investigation, additional victims coming forward, and ultimately the arrest and prosecution of the teenager. The investigation revealed a pattern of behavior that had been occurring for years undetected.
Child protection advocates pointed to this case as evidence of the importance of explicit, age-appropriate conversations about bodily autonomy, appropriate touch, and the right to report. Children often don't disclose abuse not because they don't want to, but because they don't have the language for it, don't believe they'll be believed, or are afraid of disrupting important relationships.
The Penn State scandal, for all its horror, forced a national reckoning with how adults create conditions in which abuse either continues or stops. That reckoning had consequences — including, in cases like this one, the stopping of abuse that might otherwise have continued.
