Paralyzed in Body Free in Mind

Paralyzed in Body Free in Mind

The literature of disability has produced, over the past generation, some of the most searching writing about the nature of embodiment and identity available in contemporary nonfiction. This writing has largely been produced by disabled people themselves — an understandable reaction to centuries of non-disabled writers interpreting disability as tragedy, as inspiration, or as philosophical puzzle, rather than as the ordinary condition of living in a particular kind of body.

The figure of the person paralyzed from the neck down who maintains complete cognitive function is a specific case within this literature — a case that forces the philosophical questions about the relationship between mind and body into especially sharp relief. If the self is wherever you are conscious, and you are conscious entirely in a brain that is receiving no sensory information from the body below the neck, what does the body mean? What is lost and what remains?

The accounts of people who have lived with high-level spinal cord injuries for years describe an adaptation that the newly injured and the outsider looking in often cannot anticipate: the development of a life that, by their own assessment, is worth living on its own terms, not as a diminished version of some prior life. The psychological research on adaptation to disability consistently finds that people's predictions about how miserable they will be if they become disabled are dramatically more pessimistic than the reported experience of people who have actually become disabled.

This is not to minimize the losses — they are real and in many cases devastating. It is to say that the human capacity for finding meaning and satisfaction under radically altered conditions is more robust than most people credit, and that the assumption that a paralyzed body means a ruined life reflects the observer's imagination more than the lived reality.
