About us
About Thoughtful India
An Indian American news magazine edited in Naperville, Illinois, for readers who follow India, its diaspora and the suburbs where so many of its families have settled.
Who we are
Thoughtful India is an independent publication edited and published by Suchitra Sharma from Naperville, Illinois, a city in the western suburbs of Chicago with a large and growing Indian American community. The magazine covers politics, business, culture, health, food and community life, with a particular eye on the questions that Indian Americans in the Chicago area talk about at temples, school pickups and family dinners.
The For Students section is written by high school students in the Naperville area who write about Indian culture for readers their own age, and their work goes through the same editing as everything else on the site.
Sourcing and fact-checking
Every article is read and approved by the editor before it is published, and nothing appears on the site or on our social accounts without that approval. We link to the primary sources behind the facts we report, including court filings, government data, official statements and original reporting by other news organizations, so that readers can check our work for themselves.
When we quote people from private community forums or groups, we keep them anonymous unless they have agreed to be named, and we describe the community they belong to without singling out individuals. We aim to give a fair hearing to the different views within the Indian American community, which includes Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, Christian, Jain and secular families, and we label opinion and analysis so that it is distinguishable from news reporting.
Corrections policy
When we get something wrong we correct it on the article itself, with a dated note at the end that explains what was changed and why, and we update the article’s modified date so that search engines pick up the corrected version. Readers can report an error through any of the channels on our contact page, and we try to review every report within two business days.
Photographs are credited to the photographer or agency in the caption, and we use only images that we own, that we have permission to use, or that carry a license allowing publication, such as Creative Commons or public-domain works from government archives. Illustrations made for the magazine are labelled as illustrations so that readers never mistake them for photographs of real events, and anyone who believes an image has been used or credited incorrectly can contact us to have it fixed or removed.
