The letter's combination of genuine accountability and practical alternatives was, by the standards of corporate crisis communications, unusually effective. It did not minimize the problem, did not deflect blame, and gave users a concrete path forward rather than simply asking for patience.
The context of the "boasting" reference — that Cook had separately been discussing Apple's growth to 100 million iOS users — created an ironic juxtaposition. The company simultaneously at peak scale and publicly embarrassed by one of its flagship features.
