The ancients had a precise Sanskrit term for this posture: Vamkukshi (from Vama, meaning left, and Kukshi, meaning abdomen or flank).

When resting on the left side, the abdominal viscera fall away from the vena cava, leaving the primary venous pathway unencumbered.
