French Toddler Dies After Father Puts Him in Washing Machine as Punishment

A three-year-old boy died of head injuries on the night of November 25, 2011, in Germigny-l'Évêque, east of Paris, after his father put him inside a washing machine and switched it on — reportedly as punishment for a nursery-school prank in which the child had thrown a classmate's drawing down a toilet.

According to French police and reporting in Le Parisien, the child's mother, Charlène, 25, recovered the boy, Bastien, from the machine and ran to a neighbor for help, initially saying he had fallen down the stairs. The neighbor later described the child's limbs as limp "like those of a rag doll."

A judge in Meaux placed the unemployed father, Christophe Champenois, under formal investigation for the murder of his child. His wife, a mother of seven, was charged with failing to prevent a crime and failing to assist a person in danger. Both were taken into custody, and the couple's surviving children were taken into care.

The case drew horror across France — not only for the cruelty of the act but for the portrait of a household already known to be troubled. The boy's grandmother told reporters the child had been unwanted from birth.
