What the show did

Satyamev Jayate premiered on Star Plus in May 2012 to extraordinary viewership, bringing film-scale production values and promotion to social-issue television. The conversation it started extended well past TV audiences: episodes prompted political responses, policy discussions, and in some cases specific administrative action at the state level.

Why it worked

Khan's credibility as host came partly from stardom, but mostly from evident sincerity. He cried on camera, asked hard questions, and offered no easy reassurance. Indian television, accustomed to either pure entertainment or aggressive debate, had never quite seen this combination.

The offline period — disconnecting to prepare — was, in retrospect, inseparable from the show's authority. Audiences could tell the difference between a star reading cue cards and a man who had spent months sitting with the subject. That difference was the whole show.
