Obama talks about his first date with Michelle Obama

The summer of 1989, in Chicago, a 27-year-old Harvard Law student named Barack Obama reported for a summer job at the corporate law firm Sidley Austin — and was promptly assigned an adviser: Michelle Robinson, a 25-year-old first-year associate at the firm. He was immediately smitten. She was not.
"He had no money; he was really broke," Michelle would later tell the story. His wardrobe was, in her words, kind of cruddy; his first car had so much rust you could see the ground through the passenger door. And there was the small matter that he was, technically, her subordinate. So she turned down his invitations — repeatedly — until persistence won out.
Even then, she insisted it wasn't a date. Barack had other ideas, and he planned a full-court press: a day that took them to lunch at the Art Institute of Chicago, on a walk, and then to a movie everybody was talking about by a director not many people had heard of — Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing. "He was trying to show me his sophisticated side by selecting an independent filmmaker," Michelle later said. "It ended up being a pretty good movie — really great."
"We spent the whole day together," she recalled in a 2012 campaign video. "He was showing me all facets of his character. He was hip, cutting edge, cultural, sensitive."
The day ended at a Baskin-Robbins ice cream shop in Hyde Park, where, on the curb outside, Barack kissed her. "On our first date, I treated her to the finest ice cream Baskin-Robbins had to offer, our dinner table doubling as the curb," Barack once wrote. "I kissed her, and it tasted like chocolate."
They married in 1992. Twenty-three years after that summer day, the corner of Dorchester Avenue and 53rd Street — where the first kiss happened — was still famous enough to get its own historical marker.
Understanding Indian Politics
India's politics is complex—federal system, multiple languages, religions, castes, and classes create extraordinary diversity. Understanding Indian politics requires understanding this diversity.
The Federal System
India's Constitution created a federal system with significant power distribution between Union and State governments. This structure allows regional diversity while maintaining national coherence.
Diversity and Democracy
Indian democracy must accommodate extraordinary diversity. This diversity creates both challenge and strength—challenge because consensus is difficult, strength because diverse perspectives enrich deliberation.
Key Ongoing Debates
Major political debates center on economic policy (growth versus equity), federalism (state autonomy versus central authority), secularism versus religious nationalism, and caste and social policy.
Participation and Accountability
Active citizenship requires engagement beyond voting: consuming diverse news sources, holding leaders accountable, supporting civil society. Democracy requires active participation.
The Path Forward
India's democracy is ongoing project of inclusion, debate, and reform. Strengthening it requires commitment to constitutional norms and broad participation.
