Delhi most unsafe for children: Study
This is a retelling, in our own words, of the Indian Express report on the NCRB data.
Data released by the National Crime Records Bureau rated Delhi the most unsafe place in India for children. In 2011, a total of 33,098 cases of crimes against children were reported across the country — up 24 percent from 26,694 the previous year.
The rate of crime against children — measured per lakh of population — was highest in Delhi at 25.4, followed by the Andaman and Nicobar Islands at 20.3, Chandigarh and Chhattisgarh at 7 each, and Madhya Pradesh at 6. In absolute numbers, nearly 4,250 cases were registered in Delhi alone.
The figures landed as an indictment of the capital's record on child safety — and as a reminder that reported cases are widely believed to understate the true scale, since crimes against children, particularly within families, are among the least reported categories of all.
