Techie's Wife Found Dead in Bengaluru: Family Alleges Dowry Harassment

This is a retelling, in our own words, of the case reported by the Bengaluru press in July 2012. It concerns a suicide; reader discretion is advised.

H Sowmya Vishwanath, 25, was found dead at her home in Channasandra, near Whitefield in Bengaluru, on Monday night. She had hanged herself from a ceiling fan, according to police.

Sowmya, a native of Bijapur, had married Vishwanath, a software engineer with Accenture, about eighteen months earlier. A former teacher, she had quit her job after the couple moved to Channasandra. The house owner, Shivakumar, who lived in an adjacent building, told police he spotted her hanging while walking nearby; he and neighbors forced open the door and rushed her to a hospital, where she was declared dead.

Two conflicting accounts emerged. Vishwanath told police that his wife was upset because he was scheduled to go abroad on an assignment in August. Her parents, Hanumantharaya and Susheela, said their daughter had been a victim of dowry harassment.

Police took Vishwanath into custody for questioning. The Kadugodi police were investigating both claims at the time of reporting.

The case reflected a pattern depressingly familiar in Indian crime reporting: a young bride's death in the first years of marriage, two irreconcilable narratives — a family dispute on one side, dowry harassment alleged on the other — and an investigation tasked with determining which account the evidence supported.
