Katie Holmes Files for Divorce From Tom Cruise

Katie Holmes filed for divorce from Tom Cruise in New York in late June 2012, ending one of Hollywood's most watched marriages after five and a half years.

Holmes, 33, cited irreconcilable differences and sought sole custody of the couple's daughter Suri, who was then six. Cruise, 49, responded through his publicist that he was "deeply saddened" and that he wanted to work things out for the sake of the family.

The couple had married in November 2006 in Italy, and their relationship had been a fixture of celebrity coverage — from the couch-jumping announcement of their engagement on Oprah in 2005 to the birth of Suri in April 2006.

As it turned out, the divorce moved unusually fast for a high-profile split. Within weeks, the pair reached a settlement — announced in early July 2012 — under which Holmes received primary custody of Suri, with Cruise receiving generous visitation rights. The terms otherwise stayed private, as both sides requested.

The tabloid press inevitably filled the vacuum with speculation about the reasons behind the split — separate bedrooms, disagreements over Scientology, competing careers. None of it was ever confirmed by the principals, and the settlement's speed suggested a shared interest in closure over combat.

For Holmes, the filing marked a return to her own career and life on her own terms. For Cruise, it closed a chapter that had defined his public image for years.
