Exposed by sixth wife, Bihar conman arrested

The Rohtas police arrested a 35-year-old man from Dehri after his wife lodged a complaint alleging that he had married five more women in the last 10 years, pretending to be an Intelligence Bureau (IB) official.

Vijay Kumar Singh, an unemployed resident of Nawada district, had been living in Dehri with his sixth wife, Poonam, whom he married in March this year. Poonam said she had been duped, as Vijay convinced her that he was in the IB and had been on a secret assignment — one that, by its nature, could not be revealed to everyone. The secrecy of the supposed "mission" served as his cover story for long absences and for keeping each marriage hidden from the others.

According to the complaint, the pattern repeated across a decade: approach a family, present himself as a well-placed government officer in intelligence, marry, move on. The IB officer persona did double duty — it explained the respectable salary he didn't have, and it supplied a ready answer for why he could never introduce his wives to his colleagues or superiors.

It was Poonam who finally went to the police, and her complaint led to his arrest. Police were left with the familiar aftermath of such cases: multiple women, each believing she was the wife of an officer on secret duty, discovering instead that she was one of six.

The story is sensational, but the mechanism isn't rare. Impersonating officials — army officers, policemen, intelligence men — is one of the oldest confidence tricks in the book precisely because it answers the two questions a family always asks: what does he do, and why can't we check? A government job commands trust; a "secret" posting makes verification rude. All it takes is a uniform of confidence and a story that flatters everyone involved. The wives, in this case, were the ones who paid for it.
