Chai, Chat With Books: How the Club Works

"Chai, Chat with Books" is a small group of eight women in Naperville who share their passion for reading over a cup of tea and lots of chaat and snacks. The club held its very first meeting in September 2012, hosted by Vasavi Chaka, and has been gathering since, one book at a time.
What happens at a meeting?
The format is simple: one book of the month, one host, one long afternoon. The host picks the book, brews the chai, lays out the snacks, and the group talks. Sometimes the talk is about the book. Often it is about everything the book unlocked: memories, arguments, marriages, childhoods. That slippage is the whole point.
Why book clubs work
Reading is solitary; book clubs make it social. A book you might have abandoned alone becomes worth finishing because eight women are waiting to argue about the ending. And the argument is the gift: the same novel read eight ways, filtered through eight lives, becomes eight novels.
There is also the matter of the company. For many of the women, the meeting is time away from the daily grind, a standing appointment with friendship that does not need a reason. The chai is the excuse; the conversation is the event.
The desi twist
What makes this club Naperville's own is the menu. The chaat and snacks are not catering; they are the culture the members carried with them. A book club over chai and samosas is a small act of continuity: the reading list may be global, but the hospitality is unmistakably Indian.
Want to start your own?
Pick a month, pick a book, pick a host, and keep it small enough that everyone talks. The only rules that matter: finish the book (or admit you did not), bring something to eat, and let the conversation go where it wants. Eight women, one pot of chai, and a novel is a proven formula.
