Indian woman stabbed to death in Sydney
Prabha Arun Kumar, a 41-year-old Indian IT professional, was stabbed to death in Parramatta Park, Sydney, on the evening of March 7, 2015, as she walked home from Parramatta station while talking to her husband on the phone.
Her husband, Arun Kumar, who was in India at the time and heard the attack unfold on the call, later named her publicly. Police released CCTV images of a person of interest, and a 15-year-old boy was arrested and charged in connection with the killing.
The case landed hard in both countries. It came years after the wave of attacks on Indian students in Melbourne that had strained India-Australia relations — and while this killing appeared to be a random street attack rather than a racially motivated one, it revived the same anguished conversation about the safety of Indians in Australia.
