Eye on India presented a conversation between internationally acclaimed actor Anupam Kher and journalist Victoria Lautman — an evening covering life in Bollywood, Kher's forays into international cinema, celebrity, the masks actors wear, and the clash of generations and cultures within the family.

Kher's range is extraordinary: the lovable comic father in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, the ruthless villain in Karma, the stern father in Bend It Like Beckham, and the Philadelphia Eagles-loving psychiatrist in the Oscar-winning Silver Linings Playbook. He was also appearing in the Wachowskis' Netflix series Sense8, which premiered June 5, 2015.

Anupam Kher

Across a career of more than 35 years, Kher has starred in nearly 500 films and over 100 plays, including Saaransh (1984), Karma (1986), Daddy (1989), and Darr (1993). He is known internationally for Bend It Like Beckham (2002) and Silver Linings Playbook, among others. He won eight consecutive Filmfare Awards — a record — and the Padma Shri for his contribution to Indian cinema. An alumnus of the National School of Drama (1978), he served as its director from 2001 to 2004 and previously chaired the Indian Film Censor Board. He is also the author of the motivational book The Best Thing About You Is You!

Victoria Lautman

Victoria Lautman is a longtime Chicago print and broadcast journalist. She hosted and produced Writers on the Record with Victoria Lautman, the city's premier author-interview series, heard on 98.7 WFMT radio from 2004 to 2010, and spent two decades at Chicago Public Radio, hosting the cultural magazine program Artistic License. She has written for The Chicago Tribune, Interview, Architectural Digest, USA Today, and the Chicago Sun-Times, among others, and is a longtime interviewer at the Chicago Humanities Festival. She holds an M.A. in Art History from George Washington University and was writing a book on India's forgotten stepwells.
