Arnold Schwarzenegger in India

Delhi has a date with an '80s action icon this week. Arnold Schwarzenegger is in India — for the first time — to attend the 12th Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS), the annual climate and energy conference organised by TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute) and presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Schwarzenegger arrived in the capital on February 2 and is staying at the Taj Palace through February 4. The former California governor's environmental record — he signed the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, California's landmark emissions law — made him a natural headline guest for a summit built around green growth in developing economies.

The Hollywood dimension is unavoidable. His films, particularly Terminator and Total Recall, found enormous Indian audiences in the 1990s, and Indian viewers have seen him on screen before: he made a guest appearance alongside Akshay Kumar in Kambakkht Ishq (2009).

Schwarzenegger was also slated to appear at the 4th Panasonic Green Globe Foundation Awards at the Taj Palace on February 2, where Abhishek Bachchan received the Green Globe for Outstanding Efforts by a Celebrity for a greener future. When he didn't make it to the ceremony, he congratulated Abhishek on Twitter: "Congrats on the Green Globe, @juniorbachchan. More celebrities should be pumping up green progress. I'll be back, and we should get together."

True to his reputation, he made time for the food. After asking fans on Twitter for the ideal place to eat in Delhi, he dined at Bukhara in Hotel Maurya Sheraton — tweeting a photo with what he called "the biggest piece of naan in Delhi" and calling his first trip to India "fantastic."
