Hillary Clinton's staff want to ban the scrunchie

The revelation came in a 2012 Elle profile of the Secretary of State, which found that some of Clinton's own staffers were plotting a revolt \u2014 not over policy, but over the Eighties hair accessory. One top aide confessed that there was a general feeling in the office that the scrunchie could be replaced by something more stylish. "Some of us are looking to ban the scrunchies," she admitted.

The reason behind the pulled-back look, the aide explained, was the oldest excuse in the book: convenience. A woman ricocheting between time zones and briefing rooms \u2014 "as a chick, it's a big pain in the butt," the aide put it \u2014 grabs whatever keeps her hair out of her face. The weather changes, the schedule doesn't, and the scrunchie wins.

Clinton, for her part, seemed unlikely to surrender. Over her decades in public life she had cycled through headbands, scrunchies, and the famous short bob, weathering each era's fashion commentary with the same shrug. The scrunchie revolt, like so many before it, was destined to fail.
