Aamir Khan and Abhishek Bachchan are Chicagoans — at least for the next three months. For the extended Windy City schedule of Dhoom 3: Back in Action, the stars moved out of hotel suites and into rented apartments, settling in for the duration of the shoot.

The choice of apartments over hotels said everything about the scale of the production's Chicago plans. Filming began on August 8 at Wabash and Randolph and was scheduled to run through December — a full three-month location shoot, long enough that rented apartments made more sense than hotel rooms.

For Chicago's Indian-American community, concentrated in the northern suburbs, the stars' extended stay was a bonus: sightings of Aamir and Abhishek around downtown became a regular occurrence through the fall of 2012.

Such long shoots also mean real local impact — productions of this size hire significant numbers of local crew, extras, and supporting cast, creating a small but genuine economic and cultural exchange around the film.
