Rape of a five-year-old in India
A five-year-old girl was allegedly raped in Gandhi Nagar in East Delhi in April 2013, in a case that drew widespread outrage and renewed criticism of how police handle sexual assault complaints.
According to police, the child went missing on Sunday, April 14, and was found on Wednesday, April 17, locked in a room in the building where her family lived. She was taken to a hospital, where doctors said her condition was stable but serious.
Two men were arrested in connection with the case. The girl's family alleged that police initially tried to dissuade them from filing a complaint — a charge the police denied. Amid public protests, an assistant commissioner of police was suspended for lapses in handling the case.
The case came just months after the December 2012 Delhi gang rape, and it intensified demands for faster trials and more sensitive policing in crimes against children. Both accused remained in custody as the investigation continued.
