Boy kills his sister for a cell phone
A 16-year-old boy, who wanted to purchase a mobile handset, allegedly killed his step-sister and her husband and stole Rs 36,000 from them in a village in Mizoram's Aizawl district, police said.
The boy confessed before the Juvenile Justice Board that he had killed the couple on July 7 and taken the money, said Aizawl district SP C. Laldina. He was arrested from his home a day after the crime.
According to police, the boy told the board that he had been given a single-barrelled gun to hunt animals in the jungle surrounding his village — and was overcome by the temptation to rob his step-sister so he could buy a mobile phone. He shot her husband and struck his step-sister with a piece of firewood, also inflicting injuries with an axe.
The couple had recently received Rs 66,000 from the government as beneficiaries of the state government's flagship New Land Use Policy. They had already spent around Rs 30,000 of it; the rest was stolen by the boy.
