Home Decoration Must Haves

You do not need a renovation to transform a room. The right accessories — small, affordable, well-chosen — do most of the work. Here are ten must-haves that never go out of style.
1. Statement lighting. A lamp or pendant with personality changes a room's entire mood. Warm bulbs, interesting shades, light at multiple heights.
2. A large mirror. It doubles light, doubles the sense of space, and works in nearly every room. Lean an oversized one against a wall for instant drama.
3. Layered textiles. Throw pillows, a textured throw, a good rug. Textiles add the warmth that bare furniture cannot — and they are the cheapest way to change a room's color story.
4. One living plant. Greenery softens hard edges and makes a space feel alive. Start with something forgiving — a pothos, a snake plant, a ZZ.
5. Real art on the walls. It does not need to be expensive. A framed print, a family photograph enlarged, a child's drawing in a proper frame — walls should say something.
6. Candles and scent. A room that smells good feels finished. Candles, incense, or a simple diffuser add atmosphere that the eye cannot see.
7. Books, displayed. A stack of beautiful books on a coffee table, a shelf of well-worn favorites — books are decor with a soul.
8. A tray or basket. Corrals clutter into intention. A tray on the coffee table, baskets for throws and magazines — containment is the secret of calm rooms.
9. Something handmade. A ceramic bowl, a woven textile, a carved box. Handmade objects carry the human touch that mass-produced decor lacks.
10. Personal history. The souvenir from a trip, grandmother's brass lamp, the ticket stub framed. A home should look like you live there — because you do.
Start with three. Live with them. The best-decorated homes are collected slowly, not bought in a weekend.
